Staying Healthy Over Christmas

This post is a little different from my usual fashion/beauty posts, but I thought it might be helpful for some of you. I'm a complete fitness fanatic and while Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, it can definitely take it's toll on my health and fitness. All those late nights, hangovers and mince pies will do your body no good - they are good for the soul however! In no way am I saying do not enjoy yourself, because that is ridiculous! I am simply sharing a few tips for still looking gorgeous in your NYE dress after a fortnight of partying and buffets.

Eat well throughout the day
I know that people have a habit of not eating during the day of a big party so they can save calories for all the alcohol they are going to drink, or so they get drunk quicker, this is a terrible idea! Not only will you have a truly horrific hangover the next day if you drink lots on an empty stomach, you will be bloated and lack energy the next day (also intensifying the hangover). This means you will just reach for any food in sight in hope of a cure, thus continuing the cycle.
It is much better to eat small, nutritious meals throughout the day to ensure your normal body function is maintained. This is because alcohol interrupts the normal action of the metabolism. Porridge is good to have for breakfast as it keeps you full, also eggs are great as the protein really fills you up without bloating you.
Furthermore, eating throughout the day means you are less likely to binge eat and stuff yourself with too much party food! Don't deprive yourself however, just have a small portion of what you fancy (I LOVE mince pies) and leave it at that.
If you really are a dessert lover, like me, try experimenting with recipes to see if you can make your favourite Christmas treats a little healthier. There is a great blog called Deliciously Ella and she posts all sorts of healthy recipes, including these guilt-free gingerbread men! This is a great way to keep your waistline in check and also get in that family time; my sister loves to bake so this is something we could do together.

Keep hydrated
This is my most important tip: you must drink water! Drinking more water actually flushes out any excess water your body may be holding so you will actually look less bloated - great for those bodycon dress lovers. Also, staying hydrated throughout the day will lessen your hangover. I suggest drinking a small glass of water between every few drinks and also I always drink a solid 2 pints when I get home from a party before I go to sleep. Ta da! Headache free morning!
If you find pure water a little boring, add lemon wedges or cucumber to give it a little flavour, this is also very good for ridding the body of toxins. Boiled water with a lemon wedge is great for flushing out the body, so I definitely suggest this the next morning. You can also add strawberries and raspberries to your water.
Green tea is also great for bloating, but if you don't like the taste of green tea on its own, try a flavoured one. Grapefruit and pineapple by Twinnings is my favourite.

Set realistic exercise goals
Exercising is purely a habit for me, so no matter how hungover I am, I will most likely go for a run or do a little home circuit just to get me sweating a bit. Exercise is good for a hangover as the sweating actually releases all the nasty alcohol from your body. Mind you, be sensible! If you are still a bit drunk and dizzy, wait till later in the day!
Its really awkward to get into a good routine over Christmas when it comes to exercise as gyms are shut and such, but don't forget you can always exercise at home! There are some great videos on YouTube that can easily be done in your living room without any equipment. I recommend trying Blogilates, it's pilates with a difference - Google it!
You can also get in a bit of exercise whilst keeping up family time, maybe you could all go for a Boxing Day walk together, every little helps!

Rest
Christmas is a very hectic time, all the parties and visits etc, but its very important you get enough rest. Not only will lack of sleep take its toll on your patience and brain function, your body will show it too. Dull skin, lack-lustre hair and bloating are all signs of partying too hard. Getting home at 3am is great until you remember you are setting off to visit that distant Auntie at 9am the next day! If you find it hard to get sleep at night... Take naps! 20-30 minute naps are perfect for perking you up and are short enough to not be anti-social.

Christmas is the time to indulge, relax and have fun. I hope these quick tips help you all do that whilst still maintaining your health!

Gift Guide: Urban Outfitters

I've never done a gift guide before but I like to think I'm pretty good at picking the perfect gifts for people. The perfect gift has to strike a balance between thoughtful and price-appropriate, nobody likes the awkward feeling when you open up a present and realise you spent more on the other person or vice versa! I also think the gifts you give should be personal: they should reflect the personality of the person you are buying for, I hate generic/general presents!
With this in mind I thought I'd put together a little guide from one of my favourite stores; Urban Outfitters. All year, Urban Outfitters are on point when it comes to clothes and quirky items but it seems at Christmas they really up their game!

101 Places To Get F*cked Up Before You Die, £9.99
We all have that party-animal friend, and we all tend to just buy them some fancy-ish booze for Christmas, but this book solves that issue. This present is a lot more personal than a bottle of fancy Baileys and it will probably give your friend some much needed inspiration... Also, it's well worth checking out all the books Urban Outfitters has to offer, there are some really great ones!

Perfume Jewellery Box, £25
This gorgeous jewellery box doubles as a very pretty ornament and will brighten up any lack-lustre student house! This is the perfect gift for a stylish best friend or accessory mad sister.
  Prosecco candle, £6
A Prosecco scented candle? Can you say decadent Secret Santa present for a bargain price?

Keora Keora Furry Poodle iPhone 5 Case, £35
This phone case is the perfect accessory for a season that is obsessed with texture and fluff. To be honest this is probably the perfect gift for myself, I'm obsessed with fluffy things!

Hearts Photo Chain, £12
You can't really get much more personal than a photo gift. Find your five favourite photos of you and your friend and give them the gift of memories... Perfect.

Woouf Popcorn Cushion, £45
This is an excellent present for your interior-obsessed friend. Just make sure the colours match with their decorating!

Bunny Stapler, £10
Normal stationery is boring and bland. This cute stapler will cheer up any workspace.

Pug Mug, £9
I cannot get over how cute this mug is. If you know a tea/coffee addict, they definitely need this mug!

Street Style Memory Game, £15
If you need a gift for a fashion-lover that's a little more original than clothing, then this is a good alternative.

I hope I've inspired you! Urban Outfitters are also offering FREE express delivery right now, so get shopping!

Day to Night: Culottes

I've been loving looking at culottes in street style galleries and the way other people wear them for a few months now and last week I finally bit the bullet and bought my own. The pair I picked were an absolute bargain at only £7 (!!) in New Look's most recent promotion and are just a plain black tailored style. I didn't want to over complicate them just yet when I wasn't even totally sure how to pull them off!
I decided to do a little day-to-night post with my culottes just because I was a little wary of styling them at first so hopefully this will give you some inspiration.

[The weather where I live is just horrible at the moment so these photos are not the best! I will add in new photos when I actually get the chance to take some decent pictures without it snowing on me!]

Day

Jumper, ASOS. Bag, Topshop. Culottes, New Look. Boots, Public Desire.

Since the weather has turned so bitterly cold recently, I'm living in knitwear and this ASOS jumper is sooo cosy! It's very thick and warm and if cream isn't your colour it comes in khaki too. I picked up the boots at Clothes Show Live over the weekend from Public Desire, but I've had my eye on them for a while. They are super pointy and the slight heel makes them very versatile. I think the colours here are so simple and classic that the fur clutch is essential to add a bit of quirk to the whole look. This outfit is definitely casual but it also looks very put together.

Night

Crop top, New Look. Shoes, George @ Asda. Clutch, Chic. Culottes, as above.

If you are looking for an alternative to a dress for a party over the festive season then culottes are your answer! Paired with ankle strap heels and a sparkly crop top they look appropriately festive but unique. I think parties are the perfect time to take some fashion risks and wearing these you'll definitely stand out. If you really feel like pushing the boat out a bit, ASOS have some gorgeous culottes in a burgundy coloured satin material.

Do you have a pair of culottes yet? I'd love to see how you've styled them - leave me a comment!

My Favourite from the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show, London 2014

Unless you have been hibernating for the past two weeks, you will know that the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show took place this week in London. I love watching the show when it is aired on TV purely because it is so different from your average catwalk show; it just looks so fun!
While opinions are very divided on the subject of women walking a catwalk in nothing more than underwear, I personally think it's pretty empowering. The VS Angels are among the highest paid models in the world, and they are some of the most beautiful women in the world, so more power to them! I think it's great that they can show off their hard-earned bodies in a way that is fun and light-hearted. Also, I think the show appeals far more to women than it does men anyway as most of the men I've spoken to about it didn't even know it was happening! So I don't see the show as the objectification of women, I see it as just beautiful women strutting their stuff, having fun, selling lingerie and getting paid a hell of a lot of money to do so.

With all that being said, I've picked out some of my favourite looks from the show and some of my favourite 'pink carpet' dresses from the after-party.... [Photos taken from elleuk.com and vogue.co.uk]
